There has been a growing trend of games in the past few decades that aren’t simply played on a board emulating a situation that people need to react around. A number of games are slowly moving toward constructing a new world for the game to take place in. Players are given an entirely new set of circumstances about the world in which the game is set and through these circumstances, they come to learn about just what is an isn’t possible in this alternate reality. Sometimes, participants even play the game under a number of different species. It is not uncommon for mythical creatures, such as elves, fairies, dwarfs, trolls, and other species to be prominently features in the game, both as playable characters and opponents.

Alternative reality games are popular because it gives players the chance to escape the real world and enter one where they might be someone else for a period of time. With this exciting format in games such as Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures, the players will adopt the personality and characteristics of another personal, usually provided in a basic format by the game itself. Generally, these character formats have a basic set of skills listed, such as their magic potential, weapon skills, communication ability, and maybe some distinguishing physical characteristics. Usually, the player can then fill in the blanks a little more, fleshing out their character, giving them a name, personality, and even a personal history.

The longer that the game continues, the more abilities and history that the character can develop, and the more well-rounded they become. Many Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures players have a character that they’ve been developing for years and as a result, some of these characters have more depth and range than a popular character from a film or a novel. Some players become rather attached to their characters and know them intimately, giving the game a sense of familiarity and comfort.

The world that the game is set in also, however, can become well developed and intricate. Usually, one of these alternative reality games will provide a deluxe rule book where the setting of the game is explained. It will explain the differences between the real world and the invented one, and in the case that the invented reality is entirely different from the real world, it will usually provide examples to help explain precisely how. Players need to adeptly move through the alternate universe in order to function well within the game and the first step in doing so is to understand the world they are inhabiting within the game. Often, the game will provide the players with missions and quests, giving them an easy starting place to begin enjoying.

The most commonly used element of these alternative reality games are dice. Most of the outcomes within the game are determined by dice, players will often roll dice to determine the outcomes of a battle or about random elements which may happen during the game. Dice are the friends of any games, especially one enjoying an alternative reality game. These games can often provide a fun escape for people, giving them a place to experience an immersible experience in another world, much like a video game, but even more freeing.

Collecting as a hobby choice can be an exciting, fun filled experience. Getting started in the collection of miniatures is not all that difficult though there are some important steps to take in order to get off to a good start. Miniatures have been a long time favourite among collectors for many years. The possibilities can be rather endless when it all comes down to your imagination.

Once you have made the decision to begin a miniature collection, it’s important to select what type you wish to collect. Do not make choices based on what other people are choosing to collect or what is rumoured to be a hot ticket item. What really matters is that you are collecting miniatures that you have a genuine interest in. In many cases miniatures will be related to a certain game or type of collectible. It’s vital that you love what you do so choose something that you’re interested in.

Some people prefer to go with a certain theme such as cars or trains. There are many great options to get you started if that’s what you’re into. Browse around a local craft store or do some research online regarding particular pieces that may be especially suitable for beginners. Research is increasingly important if you plan to invest money of any sum into collecting. It’s easy to become misled if you are not sure of what you’re looking for. Information gathering is what takes you from amateur status to a budding professional.

Any of the miniatures or miniature accessories that you purchase should be properly documented for verification purposes. This may be required if your collection is expensive or valuable in any way. Proof of authenticity is what makes a collectible unique and valid. It’s also crucial to have for insurance purposes. It’s not necessary to always insure your collection but in many cases it is recommended. In the event of fire, flood or theft, insurance will ensure that your collectibles are covered. Failure to properly document items like this can result in a complete loss where there is no reimbursement. Protect your investments for safe keeping.

Perhaps the backbone of having any kind of collectible is the fanciful display arrangements that are possible. Putting your pieces on display for all to see is fun and allows one to experiment with décor and creativity. Of course it is important not to display certain items in direct sunlight. Find out what material your miniatures are made out of first. Anything that cannot stand sun or intense cold should be stored at room temperature out of direct light.

Another good point to make note of is the size of some miniatures. They can be too small for little children who may risk putting them in their mouth. Proper maintenance of your miniatures is part of your display. A collection is much more enjoyable when it is kept dusted and appropriately displayed. Miniatures for beginners are just the starting point. From there the possibilities are as wide as your imagination and as deep as your interests.

You have probably heard of Warhammer and Warhammer 40k, and if you have not then chances are you have seen the excellent computer game Dawn of War.

Games Workshop are the masterminds behind these epic franchises. As the largest tabletop battle games company in the world, Games Workshop are also responsible for the more recent games based on the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

A Little History

Warhammer Fantasy Battle was the first game to be set in Warhammers alternate middle earth realm. Since its release in 1983 Warhammer has inspired generations of table top gamers, introducing them to painting and collecting the miniature models that represent battlefield units.

Warhammer 40k is Games Workshops futuristic version of the original game, set in the far future. Post apocalyptic societies struggle to control the galaxy, finding strange alien races and evil around every corner. This franchise was brought to wide media attention with the release of Dawn of War on the PC in 2004.

The Warhammer Fantasy Franchise

The Warhammer fantasy franchise encompasses table top games, role-playing games, card games, computer games, books, magazines and comics. Games Workshop is famous for the hard line it takes against impersonators and those who try and sell fake versions of their products, specifically the miniatures needed to play the table top games.

25 years of game development has produced an amazingly rich and detailed world. The official website lists over 200 written resources for Warhammer Fantasy. Additionally many older products are no longer in print or are unavailable.

The depth of information is staggering. Historical, religious and political histories are available for each of the 15 major armies used in the game.

Warhammer Fantasy inspires amazing artwork. Books produced as part of the worlds background feature stunning illustrations. Fans of the franchise also produce spectacular artwork of their own – often rivalling the official artists.

An Expensive Hobby

Warhammer has come a long way from those early days. Games Workshops commercial attitude to the franchise has turned many unsuspecting people into serious hobbyists who are almost addicted to the system.

Miniatures are supplied unpainted and unassembled, much like an airfix model. To collect, build and paint armies consisting of hundreds of models is not for the faint hearted! Add to this the need to create scenery and model buildings and you begin to appreciate the time, effort and money that fans invest into Warhammer.

Warhammer And The Future

The Warhammer franchise appears to be eternal. Games Workshop are clearly willing to move with the times as demonstrated by the release of several computer games in the past decade.

The impending release of a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) – Warhammer: Age of Reckoning - based in the Warhammer fantasy world is adding to the reputation of this gaming giant. Nearly 600,000 people have signed up hoping to get a sneak preview of the game, providing solid evidence that Warhammer is now firmly in the mainstream.

If you love golf, you probably like to play as often as you can. Getting to the golf course is not always easy, due to time restraints and other obligations. That doesn’t mean you don’t have time to play some golf games when you can’t hit the course. A lot of families like to golf together, and this is often very expensive. There are golf games you can play on your home gaming system, and also some golf games you can do in your own back yard. Not only will you be spending quality time together, you can also increase your skill.

Because my husband loves to play golf, my daughter has developed an interest in golf. I don’t mind playing, but I can’t watch it on television. Once I start watching, I’m off for a nap. It never fails. Those two, however, can sit there together and watch it for hours. They have also made up a few of their own golf games to play in the back yard. It’s always been something special they share, and has helped both of them play better. Granted, my daughter isn’t a master golfer, but she’s getting the hang of things rather quickly.

One of the golf games they play is rather simple, but they always have fun doing it. They set up stakes in the yard, and then practice putting. The best putts roll to rest up against the stake, much like you would aim for the hole in a regular game of golf. While this doesn’t seem like much, it has surprised me how much better my daughter does when we play miniature golf. This also helps my husband from losing his patience, because it is just a game in the back yard, and no one is keeping score.

You can make up your own golf games like this one, and as long as you aren’t driving the ball through your neighbor’s windows, you should have hours of fun playing with your family, and improving your skills. You can also find back yard golf games that are ready made. Some you can use to practice your swing by hitting a ball connected to something. No matter how hard to swing, the ball won’t go too far and cause any damage.

On rainy days, you can always fire up the gaming system and play against the big boys. Though my daughter isn’t very good at this, she loves to watch my husband play, and often cheers him on. Not only are they having fun together playing golf games, I’m getting some time to myself.

This certainly is one of the famous and popular British pastimes. If you want to do something interesting you can go karting. There are various indoor and outdoor go-karting tracks in the UK, which makes it easy to find a karting venue even if you were a first timer. Whether you are a local or a tourist, karting in Bristol is a great entertainment option. Just in case you are not well aware of the multiple venues, you could check online beforehand prior to venturing out. This is not a difficult task and also helps you acquire a fair picture of the going rates.

Karting in Bristol is a simple sport and can be learnt at ease. The sport is not apt for very small children but is a great sporting choice for most others. Of course you do have mini go-karts for extremely young kids. The game is exciting; and quite certainly can provide you with the much needed adrenaline rush. It is the miniature version of professional racing, i.e., motor sports. The difference being your track is much smaller, safer and the vehicle you are in charge of doesn’t run on special formula engines. These vehicles are small and very low in height. In fact they look very much like toy replicas of the real thing, but surely these little machines offer you much more than toy cars. They are the real thing and that’s the farthest most of us get when it comes to being on a racetrack.

These miniature cars can’t acquire very high speeds and this makes them rather safe. They are open from the top that is without a hood. When in the vehicle you are required to wear a helmet and steer your vehicle around the track. The fastest on track wins. More and more people are engaging in karting in Bristol as it proves to be an ideal getaway from daily mundane lifestyles. At every venue you will have trained professionals who will escort you and help you race and learn how to race. This makes the experience worth it and a lot more fun.

Karting in Bristol is very popular amongst a number of youngsters as well. This is because younger individuals are not allowed to have licenses and can’t get behind the wheels of a real vehicle and hence this becomes the best alternative. In fact many parents are initiating their children into karting, especially since the Brits now have their own F1 champ in Lewis Hamilton, who too started out as a young child.

Hence you could opt for karting in Bristol for varied reasons, but at the end of the day, this sport surely keeps you intrigued and asking for more. In fact now they even have professional races with official sponsors. Best of all winners are rewarded with great cash incentives as well as further prospects of racing. If you were here, not to explore professional aspects you would still go back home feeling really nice about yourself. Karting in Bristol is an enjoyable sport that can be experienced as a family event or even if you were just hanging out with your friends. It is easy to master, and once on the racetrack, you are a winner in your own rights.

Many parents worry about the video games available to children today with all the violence. However, many of the most popular games of today are non-violent and educational - a parent’s dream! If you have a 5 to 8 year old and are not sure which video games for is the best, check out this list:

7. Super Monkey Ball

Children will love the monkeys in this game that maneuvers through mazes. Enclosed in see-through balls, the kids work the monkeys through different levels that become more difficult the longer you play. The controls for the movement of the game are very easy for even the littlest hands. This game helps your child develop quick reflexes and understand strategy. In competition mode, up to four kids can play each other.

6. Backyard Soccer

Backyard Soccer allows kids to pick teams from an animated bunch of players. They will love the action packed sports excitement of the game as they play realistic soccer games against other teams. Non-violent yet fun, Backyard Soccer teaches your child the importance of team spirit and being a team player.

5. Sponge Bob Square Pants: The Movie

If you have children of different ages, Sponge Bob Square Pants: The Movie is a great game because you can set the level of difficulty. Suspecting Mr. Krabs has stolen King Neptune’s crown, Sponge Bob and Patrick set off on a journey to Shell City to retrieve the crown. Children can play as Sponge Bob or Patrick in a great adventure game that will interest them for hours on end.

4. Animal Crossing

Animal Crossing is a real time game, meaning that the clock coordinates with the real clock so the sun rises and sets at the same time. Seasons also change. The little ones get to fish, earn bells (the village currency), work in the garden, socialize with neighbors, and furnish their own house - all in a village setting. Characters can be transferred from one game system to another by using a memory card, so you child can share their character with their friends. The village starts small but grows as both people and animals move in and out. Older games such as Donkey Kong can be played, but only by doing favors for other members of the village. The game not only teaches children to share and cooperate with others, but it also helps with reading and writing.

3. Pajama Sam 3

Children will love helping Pajama Sam as he makes his way through the human body and parents will love it for its educational value. Children learn to problem solve by helping Pajama Sam as he tries to collect box tops and battles the evil Cookie Gang. In addition, there are nutritional lessons included in the game. Pajama Sam 3 helps children develop their logical thinking and memory skills by involving them in riddle solving. In addition, learning about empathy, compromise, and table manners makes this a great game for children that parents will love.

2. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe

If you children loved the movie, they will love this video game with all the familiar characters. This action-adventure game sets players in Narnia, where four young brothers and sisters, each with their own special strengths, have to work together to help defeat the White Witch and her army. Kids can explore secret locations, find hidden weapons, and meet new characters. One of the best parts is they can link up with their friends to play the game together.

1. Nintendogs

While you would probably prefer your child to have a real dog, that is not always possible, but Nintendogs is the next best thing! Children can choose from different breeds of dogs including Labrador retriever, miniature schnauzer, toy poodle, corgi, miniature pinscher, and shiba. They learn what it actually takes to care for a puppy, including playtime with flying discs and balls to help the puppy’s agility. They can bath the puppy, pet it, walk it around the town, and buy additional supplies for the puppy. Once they earn enough cash, they can even buy more puppies. Voice commands can be used to train the puppy to do tricks. Children will love that they can interact wirelessly with friend and their Nintendogs. This game is great for teaching responsibility and compassion for animals.

No matter what video games your children play, make sure that you occasionally watch to see exactly what is going on in the games and that it is something you want them to have. You might even play the games yourself - you will find most of these games very addicting!

Once upon a time, really not very long ago, if you wanted to know what it was like to play guitar you bought a guitar, learnt some chords and got sore fingertips before strumming out that first baby-steps, three or four chord song - usually “Knockin On Heavens Door,” “Smoke on the Water” or, if you bought a capo too, “Wonderwall.”

Then, as you progressed from strumming chords you could pick out individual strings and when you threw in a D and G you had “Everybody Hurts” and as the skill builds up you could tackle those songs that would make your wrist fall off with practice such as the circus like riff that opens “Sweet Child Of Mine.” With every Nirvana riff nailed a feeling of satisfaction would emerge and you’d become braver, tackling more complex sounding tracks such as Jane’s Addiction’s “Just Because” before your confidence was up enough to play with other guitar bashers - or, in technical terms: musicians - and learn more.

At least, that’s how I did it.

Not anymore though. This thing called Guitar Hero traversed its way from Japanese arcades to shop shelves. A miniature, plastic little guitar shaped controller with colour coded buttons in place of frets. No need to learn actual chords and riffs when you can push coloured buttons, as prompted along to guitar classics. Then there’s sequels and dedicated editions. Not to mention being able to hook it up with your mates games and have face-offs. If only you could do such things with REAL guitars.

Then there’s Rock BAND - to give you all the fun of being in a real band without any of that troublesome stuff of say, buying instruments, learning instruments, learning and writing songs and.. creating. Oh no, who needs that when you can spend upwards of 70 quid on a fake guitar or drumkit which, by the way, you look really cool playing, and PRETEND?! Wow, with one person singing, one person pushing buttons pretending to play guitar and another hitting colour coded drum pads it’s almost like you’re in a band! Wow.

Let me illustrate how I see this in terms of the devolution of music: imagine you’re walking down the street. You walk past a house and the garage door is open, inside a drummer twirling the bolts on top of the symbols and setting up while two kids churn out guitar chords and lanky kid with a bass (they’re always the lanky ones) tunes up. Two minutes later they’re in the middle of a slightly loose and ever so slightly out of tune cover of “Love Buzz.” It’s not great but they’re getting there and in a few months they’ll be playing it infront of people and calling themselves something like Plastic Glass and people will be jumping up and down. Teenage girls will be adoring them and soon they’ll be writing their own tunes and maybe, this is just a maybe mind as the record industry is in a scary state, they might even get to make an album.

Keep walking down the metaphorical street.

Now you come to a house with no net curtains, you can see straight through the window. Inside there’s a large tv and around it three young adults, one of them has what looks like a microphone in his hand, another has something resembling a stratocaster (it even says Fender on the headstock but you can’t see that from the street) and the other is sat behind what looks like half a drumkit but somehow.. not quite right. Then as images appear on the screen they start what looks like a game of make believe and dance around as if they’re pretending to be the band that made the music on the game. Never mind they didn’t write it, never mind that they don’t know how to really play but they are going to pretend they did. After three and a half excruciating minutes of watching these people pretend (just be grateful the kids in this house aren’t into it enough to dress up too) they do a little excited jump - perhaps even a little chest bump - and celebrate the fact that they got enough points to unlock another song they can pretend to play.

Now if people continue to do this instead copying songs at the first place you stopped how will music get made? Where will the soundtracks for your Make Pretend Game come from?! If you ask me, the only difference between Rock Band/ Guitar Hero and the old Harry Enfield sketch of Tim Nice-But Dim rocking out with his tennis racket to Dire Strait’s “Sultans of Swing” is that his racket wasn’t actually shaped like a little plastic guitar and could do something useful like play tennis.

It’s getting so bad that bands are actually releasing their songs ONLY via these games.

So yeah, if you wanna know what it’s like to be a gangster and blow things up then by all means by a game. And yes it may be fun and quicker than actually learning but if you want to know what it’s really like to play guitar, buy one. You can pick them up cheap enough to start learning on - easily as cheap as buying the game and controllers. If you want to get the rock band experience find a couple of friends that play instruments - not toy ones - and play with them. Trust me, it’s the most fun you’ll have.

Collecting miniatures isn’t for everybody but to those who enjoy it, it can be a wonderful hobby. Some people choose to collect them because of a game or story affiliated with them while others simply do so for the decorative aspect. It doesn’t matter what your reason is for collecting miniatures, so long as you enjoy them. A great amount of work often goes into the creation of miniatures as most of them are completely hand painted.

Whatever collection you choose to begin, it’s important that you enjoy it. Passion is necessary for all forms of hobby as it is the backbone of the entire experience. It’s important to note that the collection of miniatures is not something that should be undertaken in the hopes of obtaining a great monetary value. It is about creatively displaying something that you love. Though miniatures can in some cases go on to gain worth, it is unlikely to be substantial enough to set out to do just that. It just cannot be anticipated.

Miniatures should be stored properly at all times. Most people choose to put them out on display somewhere. They should be up high enough to prevent children from reaching for them. They can be quite small and may possibly present a choking hazard. This is important to note if you have small children in the home. Room temperature is best for most miniatures. Temperatures too hot or cold can result in disfigurement, especially if moisture is involved. A glass display case is a good idea for safe storage while keeping them on display for all to see. There is surely no sense in storing them away out of view.

If the miniatures that you collect come packaged with any form of official documents, it’s absolutely essential that you keep them safely stored. If anything were to happen to the item you would be required to produce this paperwork in order to prove the authenticity of the miniature. Likewise, if you wish to insure the collection then you must take care to keep all of the receipts. Even if your collection is not of great value, it is still worth whatever you paid for it. In the event of a fire or flood, insurance will need proof of the collection’s worth in order to successfully replace it.

Though it may sound outlandish to some, there is always the option of designing and distributing your very own miniatures. As collecting miniatures is a hobby to some, to others the crafting of them is a hobby. If you possess a skilled, steady hand then perhaps creating a collection is of interest to you. There will certainly never be any question as to the originality of the pieces. Many vendors of miniatures choose to sell their wares online. This is not at all unrealistic. Rather, it’s simply a matter of locating those who want to purchase such items.

Collecting miniatures is as rewarding a hobby as any. The truest reward comes in the enjoyment one receives with each and every piece.

They say that boys will be boys and although that can be a very subjective generalization, the evolution of boy’s toys into a hobby for grown men can attest to the fact that some boys never grow up-at least in terms of their toy cars.

RC (radio controlled) cars is the general term for any car model that uses a radio control system for remote management. However, there are two types of RC cars: the toy grade, which was designed for young boys; and the hobby grade which is the choice of adolescent boys and men of all ages.

The only similarity between the toy and hobby grade RC cars is that they are both models of land vehicles that are used via remote radio control system. The main difference in the two types of models however is that the toy grade one is just a bunch molded plastic that resembles the look of a miniature car, while the hobby grade types are actual miniature models of vehicles that come with individual parts assembled much like a real, full sized car. In fact, hobby grade RC cars are treated exactly like real cars because it requires regular maintenance and run on actual miniature car engines.

Some hobby grade RC cars run on electrically propelled machines while the rest run on fuel powered engines. The complexity of hobby grade RC cars is probably the main attraction for men of all ages. That and the fact that hobby grade RC cars are made for racing that allow men to compete with each other using their personalized racing cars. An RC cars hobbyist will have to decide whether he wants a fuel powered or electric powered vehicle. On both types of engines, there will be trade offs.

For instance, electric powered RC cars are generally lighter than their fuel powered counterparts. However, fuel powered RC cars are faster than their electric counterparts. These trade offs are analyzed by the hobbyist in making his decision on which type of RC car to own. All these hobby grade RC cars come with complex parts that can be expanded and changed so that a hobbyist can own a fuel powered car which he can change for an electric engine if he wants.

Because the RC cars are used for racing, they are fitted with extra powerful radio controlled systems that allow remote control from many distances. Not only that, since there are different terrain in which an RC car race can be held, there are also off-road models suited for all terrain racing because of their wheels and suspension.

Whether your RC car is electric or fuel powered, you can be assured that your car will need a lot of maintenance from repair and upgrading of car parts to cleaning and tuning to make sure that your race machine can hold its own out on the race track among other RC cars.

So you see, these RC cars are true toys for the bog boys. They are something that can be appreciated by grown ups in terms of complexity and ability for real races and it allows men to feel like boys again even for just a while.

Miniature Schnauzers

The miniature Schnauzer is the outcome of the result of crossbreeding between the standard size Schnauzer and one or more smaller breeds like Miniature Pinscher or Affenpincher and poodle. The aim was to create a smaller breed of standard Schnauzer which proved successful. Germany is the place where it originated in the early nineteenth century. The breed is one of the favorite and most popular breed in US.

The miniature Schnauzer comes in the color combination of pepper, salt, black and silver. Like any other dog miniature Schnauzer requires proper and regular grooming. But it advisable to include healthcare in grooming as this will help to keep the coat of your pet healthy. The coat over the top is very coarse and hard whereas the undercoat is extremely soft. The wiry coat of Miniature Schnauzer is easy to take care of. It should be trimmed around the eyes and ears and the knots should be clipped if any.

The maximum weight gain is up to fifteen pounds and it can reach to the height of twelve inches. The life expectancy of this miniature breed is around fourteen years and the time spend with the Miniature Schnauzer will always be a quality time. These dogs are bold and courageous and were originally used for guarding small farms, herds and families. They were once used as rat hunter and their small body helped them to get into tight places. Their natural instinct as rat hunter makes this dog untrustworthy when kept around small pets. Any animal smaller to them can suffer the attack of Miniature Schnauzer.

They are very lively and energetic and demands the attention of the owner, if not played with them they invent their own games and derive fun. They are very sensitive and emotional and if ignored by the owner for a long period can lead to depression and further leading to mental and physical deterioration. Miniature Schnauzer enjoys the company of children and knows to be gentle with them; moreover he is a very good companion with larger pets.

They can be easily adjust into the family and can be loving and loyal provided that they get comfortable with the surroundings. They are the excellent watch dogs and barks on those who appear to be a threat for their family. They are very cautious regarding strangers and shall defend vocally and do not resort physically. This breed easily gains weight if fed with balanced diets and regular exercise. In travelling they can prove to be very good companions.

Before and after buying a miniature Schnauzer a through medical checkup along with the inquiry of the medication and immunization should be done to keep you dog with sound health. This breed is considered to be a healthy breed but still it can have some health problems like bladder stones, diabetes and pancreatitis. It should never be fed with chocolates as this can act as poison and can take the life of your dog.
